Michael Stella

The huge variety of housing stock from wonderful Victorian single family homes to the typical 3-decker multi-family structures Boston is famous for caught Stella’s attention when he first moved to Dorchester in 1970 to attend college. These properties instilled him with the desire to work towards restoration and development of many of the neglected buildings in the Dorchester neighborhoods which he has done since forming Star Contracting with partner John Molé in 1975.

Stella has served for 20 years as a director of the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, one of Boston’s oldest non-profit CDCs, and as Chair of the NDC’s Development Committee has helped in developing a 600+ unit portfolio of affordable housing along with a significant amount of commercial, retail and office space in the Codman Square area of Dorchester.

In addition to his volunteer work, Stella has also served from 1993 to 2008 on the Board of Directors at Boston Community Capital and as Chair of the Loan Committee of Boston Community Loan Fund. Stella is also a director of the Dorchester Historical Society which owns and stewards Boston’s oldest free-standing house, The Blake House, and the Clapp estate on Boston Street.
